Message of Gratitude

As my time as a pre-service exchange student comes to an end, I want to express my heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to the following individuals and groups of people who helped me participate in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity as a college student.

My gratitude to Capiz State University through the leadership of Dr. Editha C. Alfon for giving us the opportunity to experience in-practice teaching in Indonesia. Soar High, CAPSU.

As the university offers such opportunity, this wouldn't be possible without the effort of various individuals who worked-out to make this activity happened.  EXCURSIONS AND NEW EXPERIENCES 

Embarking on an enlightening journey as an educator in a foreign land is a voyage brimming with rich experiences and endless possibilities. Teaching in another country is not merely a job; it is an opportunity to expand horizons, forge connections, and compose a harmonious symphony of knowledge. Reflecting on experience, it’s really a breakthrough in terms of exploring the captivating allure of venturing beyond borders and the compelling reasons why teaching abroad is a transformative endeavor.

I am forever grateful for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity given to me. Going to teach abroad was never in my wildest dreams, yet God made it happen! There are so many things I've learnt and gained throughout my stay in Indonesia, and I can say that every moment is worth cherishing and remembering!

During my stay in Indonesia, I have found that the country is the largest archipelago in the world.

    Although Bahasa Indonesia is the official language, there are several languages and dialects spoken throughout the Indonesian archipelago.  I am aware that misunderstandings arise frequently when we talk with one another. Language is one of the difficulties. Despite the obstacle, I was able to join them and create a friendship and mutual respect.

One of the beautiful characteristics that I admire in the Indonesian people is their love of nature. The host university, Universitas Muhammadiyah Kotabomi, takes us to one of the protected forests in West Liwa as part of the educational experience. They are lucky, in my view, because they are still the habitat of many unusual and endangered creatures.

        Despite our differences, notably our religious beliefs, I had no problems throughout my time in Indonesia. Respect is one of the reasons why everything works smoothly. I respect their beliefs and traditions, and they reciprocate. Muslim people pray 5 times a day and Islam is the dominant religion in Indonesia.

        When it comes to cuisine, I feel Indonesia has many amazing dishes to offer. During my stay in Indonesia, I tried every typical Indonesian breakfast, lunch, supper, and snack. I've discovered that people in Indonesia prefer spicy food. Almost every meal has chile. Indonesian cuisine is an essential component of the world's best culinary destinations, and eating genuine Indonesian food may bring a sense of inner fulfillment.

Wanderlust Unleashed. Satiate my wanderlust while pursuing my passion for education. Teaching in Indonesia give me an opportunity to presents a unique experience on explore breathtaking landscapes, delve into rich historical sites, savor mouthwatering cuisines, and forge lifelong friendships with fellow student teaches from around the said place-Bandar Lampung Indonesia. Each day becomes an adventure waiting to unfold.

Our foster parents, Papa Tanto, the supervisor of Soekarnno Hatta,  give us the chance to attend the Muslim convention/meeting. We were delighted to be part of the meeting.

As part of the program, the host university given us the chance to visit and experience the beautiful beach in Krui.

As we stay in our host university, they allow and invites us to share the unique culture and traditions of the Philippines.

My host school-SMK Muhammadiyah Kotabomi initiated to have their closing and farewell ceremony. They provided me a lot of souvenirs and gift that are worth to remembered!

    Stepping out of my comfort zone and embracing the challenges of teaching in a foreign country cultivates resilience, adaptability, and a heightened sense of self-awareness. The experience becomes a transformative catalyst, molding me into a more empathetic, open-minded, and culturally sensitive individual. It offers a plethora of opportunities for my professional growth. I gain invaluable cross-cultural teaching skills, learn innovative teaching methods, and acquire a global perspective that enriches my pedagogical toolkit. The experience becomes a springboard for my career advancement and opens doors to exciting prospects in international education.

            Welcome to my first-ever blog! 

        Hello and welcome to my first blog post! My name is James Estores VIllasis, and I am a participant of the 9th Batch of the SEA-Teacher Student Exchange Program. I came from the Philippines and am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Secondary Education with a major in Social Studies at Capiz State University Burias Campus.

     This blog post was made to highlight the terrific and incredible experiences I had while working as a pre-service teacher in Indonesia. This practicum offers immense personal and professional growth opportunities for me. It allows me to step out of my comfort zones, adapt to new environments, and develop a deeper understanding of diverse cultures and perspectives.

    Also, I acquire valuable intercultural communication skills, enhance problem-solving abilities, and become more adaptable and flexible in their teaching methodologies. This opportunity also provides an excellent chance for me to improve my language skills and develop fluency in another language. The process of interacting with students, colleagues, and the local community in my host country language promotes linguistic growth and cultural immersion for me.

                             SUMMARY AND SUGGESTIONS

1.      Purposes of Practicum

By teaching in another country, educators have the opportunity to make a positive impact on a global scale. They can contribute to the educational development of students from diverse cultural backgrounds and promote cross-cultural understanding and tolerance. Engaging in cultural exchange, both inside and outside the classroom, helps bridge gaps and fosters mutual respect and appreciation among different communities.

This practicum offers immense personal and professional growth opportunities for me. It allows us to step out of their comfort zones, adapt to new environments, and develop a deeper understanding of diverse cultures and perspectives. I acquire valuable intercultural communication skills, enhance their problem-solving abilities, and become more adaptable and flexible in their teaching methodologies. This opportunity also provides an excellent chance for me to improve my language skills and develop fluency in another language. The process of interacting with students, colleagues, and the local community in my host country language promotes linguistic growth and cultural immersion for me.

Further, working as a teacher in another country exposes me to different educational systems, curriculum frameworks, and teaching methodologies. This exposure broadens my pedagogical knowledge, enhances my instructional strategies, and enables me to incorporate global perspectives into their teaching practices. I gain a broader understanding of education on a global scale and can bring these insights back to my home country which is the Philippines

Above all, not only that I bagged these privileges, it also offers an exciting adventure and the opportunity for me to explore new places, experience different cultures, and engage in unique travel opportunities. It allows me to immerse in the rich traditions, histories, and natural wonders of their country, providing a truly transformative experience.

To conclude, becoming a teacher in this country enables me to make a lasting impact on the lives of my students and to the community. By providing quality education, fostering critical thinking, and nurturing a love for learning.

 

2.     Procedures of Practicum

I started my observation on the first week of the 3rd day. I followed my cooperating teacher in the 10th grade. I observed how my cooperating teacher taught. After that in the second week, I made observations and teaching assists. I not only observe but also help students who have difficulty understanding the material.

My total observation hours and teaching assistants are 90 minutes. because I do it 5 times, 90 minutes every day. In the third week, I began my teaching practice. I teach from Monday to Saturday for 90 minutes per day. So, the total hours I get are 8 hours for teaching practice. At the fourth week, I did the final of my demo. this is the last time I teach and also this is the last time I come to SMKA Muhammadiyah Abung Semuli. The total hours I got from teaching assists to the final demo were 20 hours. I believe that the school followed what is being stated at the SEAMEO Guidebooks.

 

3.     Outcomes of Practicum

Teaching in another country is a transformative experience that offers countless rewards and challenges. The opportunity for cultural exchange, language acquisition, professional growth, and making a lasting impact on students' lives makes it an enriching and fulfilling career choice. By embracing this unique experiences and challenges, I create meaningful connections, broaden my perspectives, and become global educators who contribute to a more interconnected and inclusive world.

 

4.     Practical Challenges

Teaching in a foreign country is not without its challenges. Cultural differences, language barriers, and adapting to a new educational system for me are initially overwhelming. Overcoming these obstacles requires me to be resilience, patience, and open-minded. Additionally, being away from home and familiar surroundings lead me homesickness and cultural adjustment. However, these challenges ultimately lead me to personal growth and a more profound understanding of oneself and the world.

5.     Overall Impression

As an exchange teacher, my primary goal is to foster cultural understanding and promote educational exchange between different countries. I aim to bring a unique perspective to the classroom while also embracing and learning from the local culture and educational system.

I approach my role with enthusiasm and a genuine desire to connect with my students. I understand that each student is an individual with unique strengths, challenges, and learning styles. I strive to create an inclusive and engaging learning environment where students feel valued and empowered. In the classroom, I encourage active participation, critical thinking, and creativity. I enjoy incorporating interactive teaching methods, such as group discussions, debates, and hands-on activities, to make learning more enjoyable and meaningful for the students. I also strive to integrate technology and multimedia resources to enhance the learning experience.

Being an exchange teacher, I understand the importance of adaptability and flexibility. I embrace the opportunity to learn from my fellow teachers, collaborate with them, and share teaching practices from my home country. I am open to incorporating local teaching methods and curriculum requirements into my lessons while also introducing new perspectives and approaches that I have gained from my own educational background. Outside the classroom, I am eager to immerse myself in the local community and engage in cultural activities. I believe that by actively participating in local events, building relationships with colleagues and students' families, and exploring the local traditions, I can further enhance the cultural exchange experience.

Overall, as an exchange teacher, I strive to make a positive impact on the lives of my students, contribute to their academic and personal growth, and create lasting connections between different cultures.

 

6.     Suggestions for Future Improvements

Becoming an exchange teacher is an exciting and enriching experience that allows me to immerse myself in a different culture and educational system. Here are some suggestions and recommendations I suggest:

Start by researching different countries and regions that offer exchange programs for teachers. Consider factors such as the educational system, cultural compatibility, language proficiency, and personal interests. Look for countries that align with your teaching goals and professional development aspirations.

If you are considering teaching in a country where English is not the primary language, it's advisable to develop basic language proficiency in the local language. This will help you navigate day-to-day interactions and build connections with students, colleagues, and the local community.

Familiarize yourself with the cultural customs, traditions, and values of the destination country. Educate yourself about local customs, social etiquette, and educational practices. This will help you adapt more easily to the new environment and establish positive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.

Engage with other teachers who have previously participated in exchange programs. Seek their advice and learn from their experiences. They can provide insights into the challenges, rewards, and strategies for making the most of your exchange year.

Maintain communication with your home school and colleagues while you're abroad. Share your experiences, insights, and challenges. This can foster collaboration and create opportunities for future exchange programs or partnerships between your home school and the host school.

Immerse yourself fully in the local culture. Attend cultural events, festivals, and workshops. Explore the local cuisine, visit historical sites, and engage in community activities. By embracing the cultural experience, you will gain a deeper understanding of the host country and its people.

Keep a journal or blog to document your experiences and reflections throughout your exchange journey. This will not only help you process your thoughts but also serve as a valuable resource for sharing your experiences with others upon your return.

After completing your exchange program, share your experience with your home school, colleagues, and students. Organize presentations, workshops, or cultural events to share your newfound knowledge and insights. This will create a ripple effect, inspiring others and fostering a global perspective within your educational community.

Remember, being an exchange teacher is a transformative experience that requires openness, adaptability, and a willingness to learn. Embrace the challenges, cherish the connections you make, and make the most of this unique opportunity to grow personally and professionally.

TEACHING PRACTICE 

1.    Procedures of Teaching

     My teaching experience at SMK Muhammadiyah Abung Semuli taught me the value of patience, tenacity, passion, and the ability to do more with less. Teaching is one of the most rewarding occupations since it allows you to influence future generations. However, teaching without direction appears to be completely useless. As a result, in order for me to deliver my teachings effectively in the classroom, I must implement specific teaching practices. This technique will undoubtedly assist me in determining what to do next and will become a regular every time I handle the class.

The following are my procedures in handling class:

·         Greet the students in class.

·         Invites students to pray before learning.

·         Check the attendance in class. Monitor the absent and presents in class.

·         Recall the previous lesson.

·         Introduced the new lesson.

·         Tell them the learning objectives.

·         Provide an energizer to catch the attention of students.

·         Shows pictures of various example of Spices of Indonesia.

·    Divides the class into 5 groups to carry out discussions, respectively the group consists of 6-7 students.

·       Distribute guidelines that have an example of procedures in making product and afterwards the students will choose a leader to discuss the procedures in front of the class.

·         Provides material reinforcement after the student presentation activities end.

·         I am giving the opportunity to students to conclude the material already studied.

·         Give a reflection or conclusion of the material given.

·         The teacher gives good motivation to the students to the next meeting.

·         End the meeting with a prayer.

2.    Time Management and Organizing Activities

School began at 7:00 a.m. and concluded at 2:30 p.m. Every Friday, however, the lesson stopped at 11:30 a.m. since the students were heading to the Mosque for prayer.

I am responsible for two subjects in SMK Muhammadiyah Abung Semuli, and each subject has its own timetable. I have 90 minutes to handle the class in Social Studies, and the same in English. The time set in each topic should be followed, and that's why a teaching plan is important.        

3.    Problem Solving

    Language has been my only challenge when teaching at SMK Muhammadiyah Abung Semuli. English is a foreign language in Indonesia, particularly in Bandar Lampung. To put it another way, they did not practice or master the language. They never consider it a mode of communication since they are accustomed to speaking and studying in Bahasa. 

When I was teaching them, I could see their enthusiasm and eagerness to study the material. In truth, if they want to react to my question, they just translate it to Google Translation first. However, there may be instances when they do not understand what you are saying and may merely nod, smile, and stare at you while you are teaching.

As a result of this situation, I devised remedies to the problem. The first thing I did was master the fundamentals of greetings. Learning their language is difficult, but it is required since it is the only way to attract the attention of pupils and teachers. Second, it should be used in their language when presenting in class. There is always a Bahasa translation when I teach. Third, regardless of the language barrier, present an activity that will stimulate and enhance their creativity.

I believe there is no barrier when you are adaptive, responsible, and accountable in every decision you make. It is easy to say that anything is difficult because it is different from what we are used to doing, but when you are already in the situation and have no choice, your whole potential emerges.

4.    Classroom Management

When it comes to classroom management, students are disciplined. The classroom is well-organized, and I believe the teacher planned it effectively.

My first-time teaching students, I felt genuinely fantastic since they were attentive and interested. They make no noise, are silent, and pay close attention to what I say. I feel they are interested in and eager to learn from what I've given them.

5.    Lesson Plan

The lesson plan is the most important item that any instructor should think about. This serves as a guide for the instructor to teach students efficiently.
